Deaths registered on Norfolk Island from 1 July 2016 are included in this publication for the first time. This is due to the introduction of the Norfolk Island Legislation Amendment Act 2015. Norfolk Island deaths are included in statistics for "Other Territories" as well as totals for all of Australia. Deaths registered on Norfolk Island prior to 1 July 2016 were not in scope for death statistics. See Explanatory Note 13 for more information.
The 2016 release of Causes of Death, Australia includes several short articles on key topics, including leading causes, diabetes, drug induced deaths and intentional self-harm. Additional articles will be added to this release on an ongoing basis.
This issue contains revisions to the previously published Estimated Resident Population (ERP) for 2012-2015 due to re-basing of Australia's Population Estimates using the 2016 Census. Death rates for 2012-2015 presented in this publication and associated data cubes have been recalculated using 2016-census-based population estimates. As a result, these rates may differ from those previously published. However, death rates calculated by Indigenous status which involve years prior to 2016 have been calculated using 2011-Census-based Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population estimates and projections, in the absence of updated 2016-Census-based population estimates and projections. See Explanatory Note 67 for further details. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population estimates and projections based on the 2016 Census will be released in Estimates and Projections, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians (cat. no. 3238.0) in 2019.
This issue includes the release of population estimates based on the 2016 edition of the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS). The 2016 edition of the ASGS reflects growth and changes in Australia's population, economy and infrastructure since the ASGS was introduced in 2011.
